Trains stopping in Ottawa in 1965

Ours was the last generation of Ottawans when many arrived by train. During our era, there were ten passenger trains daily that stopped in Ottawa. The Missouri Pacific went down the middle of First Street from east to west. The Santa Fe line to Tulsa went down the middle of Walnut Street. (The corner of First and Walnut had cars from 3 directions and trains from 4 directions!!!)

The Chief (#19 & #20) came through Ottawa at 89 mph but didn't stop. Those riding The Chief between Chicago and Kansas City would change trains in Kansas City to a Tulsa-bound train that did stop. The other Santa Fe mainline trains would take the other route from Kansas City to Emporia via Lawrence and Topeka.
